Leadership: An Islamic Perspective

Leadership in Islam is a Trust (Amanah). It represents a psychological contract between a leader and his followers that he will try his best to guide them, to protect them and to treat them fairly and with justice. Hence the focus of leadership is on doing good.

According to Islam, every person is the shepherd of a flock and occupies a position of leadership.

Leadership is the ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. It is the human factor which binds a group together and motivates it towards goals. Management activities such as planning, organizing, decision making are dormant cocoons until the leader triggers the power of motivation in people and guides them toward their goals.

The above defination of leadership stresses that a leader is more than just a manager. Leading and managing are not the same thing. Warren Bennis, a leadership expert, summarizes the distinction between leadership and management as follows: "The difference between managers and leaders is fundamental. The manager administers, the leader innovates. The manager maintains, the leader develops. The manager relies on systems, the leader relies on people. The manager counts on control, the leader counts on trust. The manager does thing right, the leader does the right thing."

An organisation with good management and poor leadership will preserve the status quo, but may not be able to advance to a higher level of performance. An organization that has an excellent leader, but nobody with good management skills may aspire to great heights, but crash precipitously because there is no one to follow through. 

In modern Islamic organisations both leaders and managers are needed. Leaders can reframe experience to open new possibilities; Managers can provide a sense of perspective and order so that the new possibilities become reality.

A rare video of Moulana Muhammad Yousuf Sahib, Former Ameer-e-Jamaat

The following is one of the rarest videos of speeches of Moulana Muhammad Yousuf Sahib, Former Ameer-e-Jamaat. Moulana Muhammad Yousuf Sahib is a legend in the Islamic movement circles in this part of the world. You could gauge some of the finer points of those legendery scholars and leaders of the early years of the Jamaat.

At one stage he says that he used to be with Moulana Syed Abul A'ala Moududi for month every year before independence. At that time he was not aware of the partition and he never thought that a day may come when he will not be able to meet Moulana Moududi.

The point here is that Moulana spent a month every year with Moulana Moududi. This is what they call 'Suhbat - companionship'. This is the best method to train and groom personalities. மௌலானா முஹம்மத் ஷஃபி மூனிஸ் சாஹிப் மறைவு

முதுபெரும் இஸ்லாமிய இயக்கத் தலைவரும் ஜமாஅத்தே இஸ்லபாமி ஹிந்த் பேரியக்கத்தின் முன்னாள் அகில இந்தியத் துணைத் தலைவருமான மௌலானா முஹம்மத் ஷஃபி மூனிஸ் சாஹிப் 6 ஏப்ரல் 2011 அன்று காலமானார். (இன்னா லில்லாஹி வஇன்னா இலைஹி ராஜிஊன்)

அவருக்கு வயது 94. மௌலானா சையத் அபுல் அஃலா மௌதூதி காலத்தில் இயக்கத்தில் இணைத்துக் கொண்ட மூத்த இயக்கத் தலைவர் அவர். அவருடைய மறைவுடன் ஒரு யுகம் நிறைவு பெற்றுவிட்டது எனலாம். இயக்கத்தின் தொடக்கக்காலத்திலிருந்து அதன் ஏற்றஇறக்கங்களுடனும் வெற்றி தோல்விகளுடனும் பின்னிப் பிணைந்திருந்தவர் மௌலானா ஷஃபி மூனிஸ்.

அவருடைய மறைவால் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள வெற்றிடத்தை நிரப்புவது மிகவும் கடினமே என்று ஜமாஅத்தே இஸ்லாமி ஹிந்த் அகில இந்தியத் தலைவர் மௌலானா சையத் ஜலாலுத்தீன் உமரி தம்முடைய இரங்கல் செய்தியில் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.


உத்திரப் பிரதேசத்தில் ஒரு  கிராமத்தில் பிறந்தவர் அவர். தொடக்கத்தில் காங்கிரஸ் இயக்கத்தில் சேர்ந்திருந்தார். அதிலும் சோஷலிஸ கொள்கைகளைப் பேசி வந்த காங்கிரஸ் குழுவினருடன் தொடர்பு வைத்திருந்தார். இந்த நிலையில் அவருக்கு ஒரு ஸலஃபி ஆலிமுடன் பழக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. இவருடைய அறிவுக்கூர்மையையும் சமுதாயச் சிந்தனையையும் உளத்தூய்மையையும் பார்த்த அந்த ஸலஃபி அறிஞர் இந்த இளைஞரை எப்படியாவது கவர வேண்டும் என்கிற எண்ணத்துடன் நெருங்கிப் பழகினார். ஆனாலும் ஷஃபி மூனிஸ் படிகின்ற மாதிரி தெரியாததால் நூல்களைக் கொடுக்கத் தொடங்கினார். அவ்வாறு அவருக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட நூல்களில் ஒன்றுதான் ‘இஸ்லாம் அவ்ர் மௌஜுதா ஸியாஸி கஷ்மகஷ் . இஸ்லாமும் தற்போதைய அரசியல் போராட்டமும்’ என்கிற நூல். மௌலானா சையத் அபுல் அஃலா மௌதூதி அவர்கள் எழுதிய நூல் அது. இளைஞர் ஷஃபி மூனிஸின் பார்வையையும் சிந்திக்கும் கோணத்தையும் முற்றாக மாற்றி அமைத்துவிட்டது அந்நூல்.

அந்நூல் படித்து இயக்கப் பாதையில் பயணிக்கத் தொடங்கிய ஷஃபி மூனிஸ் அதற்குப் பிறகு திரும்பிப் பார்க்கவே இல்லை. காஜியாபாத் மாநகர ஜமாஅத் கிளைத்தலைவர், தில்லி மாநகர ஜமாஅத் தலைவர், தில்லி மாநிலத் தலைவர், அந்தக் காலத்து ஹைதராபாத் மாகாணத் தலைவர், மேற்கு உத்திரப்பிரதேச மாநிலத் தலைவர் என அடுத்தடுத்து பல்வேறு பொறுப்புகள் அவரைத் தேடி வந்தன.

ஜமாஅத்தே இஸ்லாமி ஹிந்தின் அகில இந்தியப் பொதுச் செயலாளராகவும் அவர் சில காலம் செயலாற்றியிருக்கின்றார். ஜமாஅத்தின் மத்தியப் பிரதிநிதிகள் சபை, மத்திய ஆலோசனைக் குழு ஆகியவற்றின் உறுப்பினராக பல்லாண்டுகளாக மீண்டும் மீண்டும் தேர்வாகி வந்துள்ளார். தற்போதைய மத்தியப் பிரதிநிதிகள் சபையிலும் அவர் உறுப்பினராகத் தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தார்.

மௌலானாவுக்கு வயது 94. இறுதி மூச்சு வரை இயக்கப் பணிகளில் தம்மை ஈடுபடுத்திக் கொண்ட சத்தியப் போராளிதான் அவர். அவர் ஓர் அறப் போராளியாக, நிர்வாகியாக, இயக்கச் சிந்தனையாளராக, வழிகாட்டியாக தம்முடைய முழு வாழ்வையும் அர்ப்பணித்துவிட்டவர் அவர்.

அகில இந்திய முஸ்லிம் தனியார் சட்ட வாரியம், அகில இந்திய முஸ்லிம் மஜ்லிஸே முஷாவரத், ஃபாரம் ஃபார் டெமாக்ரஸி அண்டு கம்யூனல் அமிட்டி, தி ஸ்காலர் ஸ்கூல் உட்பட ஏராளமான அமைப்புகளின் உருவாக்கத்தில் அவரும் பெரும் பங்கு வகித்திருக்கின்றார். மௌலானா ஷஃபி மூனிஸ் அவர்களின் நேர்காணல்களை அபூர்வமாகத்தான் படித்திருப்பீர்கள். சமரசத்தில் ஃபாரம் தொடர்பாக நேர்காணல் ஒன்று வந்திருக்கின்றது. அவருடைய செயல்பாடுகள் பற்றிய அறிக்கைகளும் அதிகமாக வெளி உலகுக்குத் தெரிவதில்லை. அவருடைய புகைப்படமும் அதிகமாக பதிவாவதில்லை. என்றாலும் மௌன உழைப்பாளியாக இயக்கப் பணிகளில் இரண்டறக் கலந்துவிட்டிருந்தார் அவர். இயக்கம் தொடங்கிய காலத்திலிருந்து அதனுடன் நெருக்கமான தொடர்பு வைத்திருந்தவர். ஷஃபி மூனிஸ் என்றால் ஜமாஅத்தே இஸ்லாமி என்கிற அளவுக்கு இயக்கத்தையும் தன்னையும் பின்னிப் பிணைத்துக் கொண்டவர்.
6 ஏப்ரல் அன்று இரவு இஷா தொழுகைக்குப் பிறகு தில்லியில் பட்லா ஹவுஸ் அடக்கத்தலத்தில் அவர் நல்லடக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டார்.

ஜமாஅத்தே இஸ்லாமி ஹிந்தின் மத்தியப் பிரதிநிதிகள் சபைக் கூட்டம் நடந்துகொண்டிருந்ததால் ஜமாஅத்தின் முக்கியமான மனிதர்கள் அனைவரும் அங்கு திரண்டுவிட்டிருந்தனர். அகில இந்தியத் தலைவர், பொதுச் செயலாளர், அகில இந்தியச் செயலாளர்கள், மத்தியத் தலைமையகப் பொறுப்பாளர்கள், மாநிலத் தலைவர்கள், மத்திய ஆலோசனைக் குழு உறுப்பினர்கள், எழுத்தாளர்கள், பேச்சாளர்கள், சிந்தனையாளர்கள், ஊழியர்கள் என ஜமாஅத்தின் ஒட்டுமொத்த பட்டாளமே அங்குத் திரண்டுவிட்டிருந்தது. ஆக, மௌலானா ஷஃபி மூனிஸ் எந்த மனிதர்களை தனது அன்புக்குரியவர்களாக மதிப்புக்குரியவர்களாக நேசித்து வந்தாரோ, எவர்களுக்கு தன்னுடைய வாழ்வில் மற்றெல்லாரை விடவும்மிக அதிகமான முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுத்து வந்தாரோ அவர்கள் எல்லாருமே அங்கு குழுமி விட்டிருந்தனர்.

மௌலானாவுக்கு இயக்கம்தான் எல்லாமே. இயக்கம், இயக்கம், இயக்கம் என்று ஓயாமல் ஒழியாமல் பாடுபட்டார் அவர். அவர் இவ்வுலகை விட்டுப் பிரிந்தபோது அந்த இயக்கமே - ஒட்டுமொத்த இயக்கமே- அவரை வழியனுப்பத் திரண்டுவிட்டது. அந்தக் காட்சி நெஞ்சை நெகிழச் செய்வதாக இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும்.

ஸஆதத்துல்லாஹ் ஹுஸைனி எழுதுகின்றார்:

கடந்த ஏப்ரல் 3 முதல் 7 வரை நடந்த மத்தியப் பிரதிநிதிகள் சபை கூட்டத்தில் நானும் பங்கேற்றேன். மௌலானா ஷஃபி மூனிஸ் தள்ளாத வயதிலும், உடல் நலம் குன்றிய நிலையிலும் மத்தியப் பிரதிநிதிகள் சபையின் அனைத்துக் கூட்டங்களிலும் கலந்துகொண்டார். பிரதிநிதிகள் சபைக் கூட்டம் நடப்பதற்கு முன்பு ஏப்ரல் 2 அன்று நடந்த மத்திய ஆலோசனைக் குழுவின் கூட்டத்திலும் அவர் பங்கேற்றார். அவர் எனக்கு எதிரில்தான் அமர்ந்திருந்தார். புன்னகை ததும்ப அவர் என்னைப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்த காட்சி இன்றும் என்னுடைய மனத்திரையில் பதிந்திருக்கின்றது.

அவர் எங்களுடம் ஏப்ரல் 5 மாலை வரை இருந்தார். மத்திய ஆலோசனைக் குழு உறுப்பினர்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுப்பதற்காகக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட வாக்குச் சீட்டில் தன்னுடைய வாக்குகளைப் பதிவு செய்து, கையெழுத்திட்டு, பொறுப்பாளர்களிடம் கொடுத்துவிட்டுத்தான் போனார். அவர் போகும் போது நண்பர்கள் பலரையும் சந்தித்து கைகுலுக்கிவிட்டே சென்றார். நானும் அவருடன் கூடவே பேசிக்கொண்டே நடந்து சென்று வழியனுப்பிவிட்டுத்தான் வந்தேன். அடுத்த நாள் அவர் வர மாட்டார் என்று நாங்கள் நினைத்துக் கூடப் பார்க்கவில்லை.

அடுத்த நாள் காலை அமர்வில்தான் அந்தச் செய்தி வந்தது. மௌலானா அவர்கள் இரவு படுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த நிலையில் மூளையில் இரத்தக் கசிவு ஏற்பட்டுவிட்டது என்பதுதான் அந்தச் செய்தி. அன்று மதியமே அவர் இறந்துவிட்டதாக செய்தி வந்தது. நாங்கள் எல்லோருமே அவருடைய வீட்டுக்குப் போனோம். அவர் மிகவும் நிம்மதியாகப் படுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அவருடைய அதரங்களில் புன்னகை தவழ்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. திடீரென்று கண் திறப்பார் :  “ஹதராபாதிலிருந்து ஏதாவது புதிய செய்தி இருக்கின்றதா? ஏதாவது நல்ல செய்தி உண்டா?” என விசாரிப்பாரோ என்றே தோன்றியது.

“ஒரு நம்பிக்கையாளனின் அடையாளத்தைச் சொல்லட்டுமா? மரணம் வரும்போது அவருடைய முகத்தில் புன்னகை இருக்கும்” என்கிற பாரசீக கவிதை வரிகள்தான் நினைவுக்கு வருகின்றன.

அன்று மாலை அவருடைய உடலை ஜமாஅத் தலைமையகத்திற்குக் கொண்டு வந்துவிட்டார்கள்.  அன்று இரவு இஷாவுக்குப் பிறகு நடந்த ஜனாஸா தொழுகையிலும் தொடர்ந்து நல்லடக்கத்திலும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கானோர் பங்கேற்றார்கள்.

அவர் ஜமாஅத்துக்காகவே வாழ்ந்தார். ஜமாஅத்தின் ஒட்டுமொத்த வரலாற்றுக்கு சாட்சியானார். ஜமாஅத்தின் முக்கியமான அகில இந்திய அமர்வு ஒன்றில் கலந்து கொண்ட நிலையில் அவர் இறந்து போனார்.  

A glimpse on the last days of Moulana Shafi Moonis!

Br Sadat Husseini has described the last days of Moulana Shafi Moonis Sahib in his own way. It is very moving, mellowing and heartening. You could feel the dynamic personality and charm of the departed leader in this brief mail. Br Sadat Husseini is one of the member of the Markazi Majlis-e-Numaindgan (Central Council of Representatives of the Jamaat). He has joined the Islamic Movement since his student days and needs no introduction. The following is the content of an email from him. Over to Br Sadat:

I was in the Numaindagana (The Council of Representatives of Jamaat that elect Ameer-e-Jamaat and Central Advisory Council)session that was held between 3-7 April in New Delhi. Maulana Shafi Moonis Sahib, inspite of his age and fragile health, attended each and every sessions of 3rd-5th April. 

He also attended the special session of the Central Shura on 2nd and participated in the deliberations. I was sitting just opposite to him in shura and still his smiling gestures are revolving in my eyes.

He was with us till the evening of 5th. On 5th evening he wrote his vote for Central Shura, met many delegates. I also had the opportunity to have a brief talk before he departed from the venue.

The first news we heard in the next morning's session was that he had brain hemorrhage that night. And by afternoon we got the message of his demise.

We went to his home. He was sleeping in comfort with a  beautiful smile on face as if he is about to say something. about to ask.."Hyderabad  ki kuchh nai baat sunao..kuchh achchhi khabar sunao.."

When death come, he has a smile on his face.)

That evening his body was kept in Markaz-e-Jamaat. And we had the honor of joining the huge crowd that attended his Namaz-e-Janazah and funeral.

He lived for mission of the Jamaat. He witnessed the whole history of Jamaat right from its inception. And died a noble death with his last activity being attending an important all India session of Jamaat.

What an exemplary life and what an exemplary death!

May Allah shower His choicest blessings on the great man..Ameen

மௌலானா சையத் ஜலாலுத்தீன் உமரி அகில இந்தியத் தலைவராகத் தேர்வு!

ஜமாத்தே இஸ்லாமி ஹிந்த் பேரியக்கத்தின் அகில இந்தியத் தலைவராக மௌலானா சையத் ஜலாலுத்தீன் உமரி அவர்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார். எல்லாப் புகழும் அல்லாஹ்வுக்கே! 

தமிழகத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்
மௌலானா சையத் ஜலாலுத்தீன் உமரி அவர்கள் 1935-இல் வேலூர் மாவட்டம் திருப்பத்தூருக்கருகே புத்தகரம் கிராமத்தில் பிறந்தார்கள். அந்தக் கிராமத்தின் உர்தூ பள்ளியில் தொடக்கக்கல்வியைப் பயின்ற பிறகு உமராபாத் ஜாமிஆ தாருஸ்ஸலாம் அரபிக் கல்லூரியில் சேர்ந்து மார்க்கக் கல்வியில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றார்கள். தொடர்ந்து சென்னை பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் முன்ஷி ஃபாஸில் பட்டமும் அலிகர் முஸ்லிம் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் இளங்கலை பட்டமும் படித்துத் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றார்கள்.

பதின்பருவத்திலேயே இயக்கத் தொடர்பு

படிப்பை முடித்த கையோடு வட நாடு சென்று ராம்பூரில் ஜமாஅத் தலைமையகத்தில் தம்மை சேர்த்துக் கொண்டார். 1954-இல் ஜமாஅத்தே இஸ்லாமி ஹிந்த் இயக்கத்துடன் தம்மை இணைத்துக் கொண்டுள்ளார். அலிகர் கிளையின் தலைவராக பத்தாண்டுகள் பணியாற்றி இருக்கின்றார். 1990- இலிருந்து 2007 வரை ஜமாத்தின்  அகில இந்தியத் துணைத் தலைவராகப் பணியாற்றியவர கடந்த பல்லாண்டுகளாக ஜமாஅத்தின் மத்திய பிரதிநிதிகள் சபை மற்றும் மத்திய ஆலோசனைகள் குழு ஆகியவற்றின் முக்கியமான உறுப்பினராகவும் அவர் செயலாற்றி வந்துள்ளார்

பத்திரிகையாளர்
மௌலானா சையத் ஜலாலுத்தீன் உமரி ஒரு பத்திரிகையாளரும் கூட.  ஜிந்தகி நவ் என்கிற உர்தூ மாத இதழின் ஆசிரியராக ஐந்தாண்டுகள் பணியாற்றிய அனுபவமும் அவருக்குண்டு.  கடந்த 29 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக தஹ்கீகாதே இஸ்லாமி என்கிற காலாண்டிதழின் ஆசிரியராகவும் பணியாற்றி வருகின்றார்.


அகில இந்திய முஸ்லிம் தனியார் சட்ட வாரியத்தின் நிறுவன உறுப்பினர்களில் மௌலானா சையத் ஜலாலுத்தீன் உமரி அவர்களும் ஒருவர்.

எழுத்தாளர், பன்னூலாசிரியர்

மௌலானா சையத் ஜலாலுத்தீன் உமரி அவர்கள் ஒரு தேர்ந்த எழுத்தாளரும் கூட. சற்றொப்ப முப்பத்து ஆறு நூல்களை யாத்திருக்கின்றார். இவற்றில் பதினேழு நூல்கள் பிற மொழிகளிலும் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டு இருக்கின்றன. தமிழிலும் நன்மையை ஏவி தீமையைத் தடுத்தல், சமூகக் கட்டமைப்பில் முஸ்லிம் பெண்களின் பங்கு, மக்கள் சேவை, ஒன்றே குலம் ஒருவனே தேவன், பெண்களும் இஸ்லாமும் ஆகிய முத்தான ஐந்து நூல்கள் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டு வெளியாகி இருக்கின்றன. இவற்றை சென்னை இஸ்லாமிய நிறுவனம் ட்ரஸ்ட் வெளியிட்டுள்ளது. 

இவற்றில் நன்மையை ஏவி தீமையைத் தடுத்தல் என்கிற நூல் அரபி, ஆங்கிலம், துருக்கி, இந்தி, தமிழ், வங்காளம் ஆகிய மொழிகளில் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இதே போன்று ஒன்றே குலம் ஒருவனே தேவன் என்கிற நூல் ஆங்கிலம், தெலுங்கு, இந்தி, மராட்டி, குஜராத்தி, கன்னடம், தமிழ் ஆகிய மொழிகளில் வெளியாகி உள்ளது. 

இஸ்லாத்தில் பெண்களின் அந்தஸ்து, உரிமைகள் பொறுப்புகள், நாட்டு நடப்பு, ஃபிக்ஹ் விவகாரங்கள், குடும்ப அமைப்பு, அடிப்படைக் கோட்பாடுகள், இஸ்லாமிய இயக்கம் என பல்வேறு தலைப்புகளில் நிறைய எழுதியிருக்கும் மௌலானா சையத் ஜலாலுத்தீன் உமரி அவர்கள் இன்று சமகால மார்க்க அறிஞர்களில் தனிச்சிறப்பும் மகத்துவமும் பெற்றவராக ஜொலிக்கின்றார். 

கல்வியாளர்
மௌலானா சையத் ஜலாலுத்தீன் உமரி அவர்கள் ஒரு கல்வியாளரும் கூட. அலிகரில் பல்லாண்டுகளாகச் செயலாற்றி வரும் இதாரா-ஏ-தஹ்கீகே தஸ்னீஃபே இஸ்லாமி ஆய்வுக்கழகத்தின் செயலாளராக, தலைவராக சேவையாற்றி வந்துள்ளார். ஆந்திரப் பிரதேசத்தின் வாரங்கல் நகரில் செயல்பட்டு வரும் ஜாமியத்துஸ் ஸுஃபா பல்கலைக் கழகத்தின் வேந்தராக இருக்கின்றார். இதே போன்று உத்திரப் பிரதேசம் ஆஜம்கர் பல்ரியா கஞ்சு நகரில் செயல்பட்டு வரும் ஜாமியத்துல் ஃபலாஹ் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தின் வேந்தராகவும் இருக்கின்றார்.

Moulana Syed Jalaluddin Umri re-elected as Ameer-e-Jamaat

Moulana Syed Jalaluddin Umri has been re-elected as Ameer-e-Jamaat. Allah Hu Akbar. He has been re-elected for the term April 2011 to March 2015.

He is from Puttagaram village near Tirupattur town in Tamil Nadu. He graduated from Jamia Darussalam, Omerabad and straight away joined the Markaz Jamaat in his teen years. He was just 19 years old when he landed in North India coming all the way from southern most part of the country. It seems as though he was destined to serve for the cause of Islam in that way. Then he never turned back. He was fortunate enough to grow in the guidance and shadow of leading lumineries of  the Islamic Movement. At those times the Headquarters of the Jamaat was based in Rampur. Moulana made it his first home.

He served the cause of Deen-e-Huq in various capacities. He was Ameer-e-Muqami of Aligarh for ten years. He has been getting elected to the Markazi Majlis-e-Numaindgan and Central Advisory Council for many decades. He has served the mission as Naib Ameer-e-Jamaat since 1990. He edited the official organ of the Jamaat 'Zindgi-e-Nau' for five years. He assumed this onerous task after the demise of Moulana Syed Ahme Urooj Qadiri. Besides he has been editing the research journal 'Tahqeeqat-e-Islami' for the past thirty years.  

Moulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari was one of the founder members of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and he is attached with various prominent educational institutions too. He is currently serving as Chairman of Idara-e-Tahqeeq-o-Tasneef-e-Islami Aligarh, an unique research institution in this country. He is one of the great scholars living amidst us. He is a prolific writer. He has written more than 36 books on various subjects. Many of his books have been translated in various languages. He penned down a voluminous book on M'aruf-o-Munkar and it has been translated in Arabic, English, Turkish, Tamil, Bengali and Hindi. His another work on Islam aur wahdat-e-Bani Adam has been translated in English, Hindi, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada and Tamil. 

By Allah's grace I had the privilege of translating some of his books. Islam aur Wahdat-e-Bani Adam and Aurat aur Islam have been published as ஒன்றே குலம் ஒருவனே தேவன் and பெண்களும் இஸ்லாமும் Allah is Great.

Veteran Islamist and old van guard of the Islamic Movement in the Indian subcontinent Moulana Shafi Moonis is no more. He has passed away in New Delhi today. Inna lillahi Wa inna ilaihi rajiwoon. With his demise the Islamic Movement has lost a jewel. An eventful era has come to an end. He was a great tahreeki leader, a contemporary of Moulana Syed Abul A'la Moududi, one who has seen the ups and downs of the tahreek..!

On his demise Ameer e Jamaat e Islami Hind, Maulana Jalaluddin Umari expressed his deep sorrow and grief and said, ‘a vacuum is created with his demise which seems difficult to fill. Life and times of Moulana Shafi Moonis He was from Muzaffar Nagar District of Uttar Pradesh and born and brought up in a village. He was attached with the socialist group of Congress party. A Salfi Aalim tried to win him over but was originally not successful. As a strategy that Salfi Aalim provided him books written by Maulana Abul Aala Maudoodi. After reading volume three of the book Islam aur Siyasi Kashmakash he was convinced and started participating in the activities of the Jamaat. Thus instead of joining the Salfi movement, which the Salfi Aalim had intended, he was won over by the Jamaat.

He has served the Islamic Movement in various capacities. He was Ameer-e-Muqami of Ghaziabad and when he shifted to Delhi he became Ameer-e-Muqami of the Delhi Jamaat. He has also served as Ameer-e-Halqa of Delhi, Western UP and erstwhile Hyderabad Halqa and Andhra Pradesh zone at various occasions. He had served as Secretary General of the Jamaat for some time. He has been member of the Markazi Majlis-e-Numaindgan and Markazi Majlis-e-Shura for many many decades. Even for this term too he had been elected as a member of Markazi Majlis-e-Numaindgan. Jamaat's Iron Man sleeps forever

Moulana was 93 and served the cause of Islam till his last breath. He was a true dayee, mujahid and leader. He was very disciplined and hard worker. I met him last November in the All India Members Conference held in Delhi. I wished him and he gave a brooding look and that's all. He was very frail and weak due to age. Inspite of that he attended the sessions with the zeal of a new convert.

A memorable incident involving Moulana Shafi Moonis
One memorable incident happened at that Ijtima. The conference concluded at the third day itself. The next day a grand public meeting was arranged. It was announced that the meeting would start at 9.00 AM next day. As I was anxious to occupy a seat in the front row I rushed to the auditorium at 8.30AM itself. The auditorium was near empty. Only Dr S. Q. R. Ilyas and some others were there.

Then a heartrending incident happened. Moulana Shafi Moonis walked in with the help of two volunteers. They were giving their shoulders to him for support and he moved slowly, slowly step by step. He was very weak and I could feel the difficulty with which he moved his legs. The time was 8.55 AM. With misty eyes I turned back to see the auditorium. It was near empty.

He was there in the dias throughout the programme. It took more than five and half hours. But Moulana Shafi Moonis didn't move from his seat. From where on earth we would bring such dedicated, disciplined workers of the movement. It aches.

நினைவில் நின்ற காட்சி!

மாநாடு முடிந்த பிறகு நான்காம் நாள் பொது நிகழ்ச்சி ஒன்றுக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்தார்கள். காலை ஒன்பது மணிக்கு நிகழ்ச்சி தொடங்கும் என அறிவித்திருந்தார்கள். முதல் வரிசையில் இடம் பிடித்து அமர வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக எட்டரை மணிக்கே மாநாட்டுத் திடலில் ஆஜராகிவிட்டோம். நிகழ்ச்சி தொடங்குவதற்கு ஐந்து நிமிடங்களுக்கு முன்பு சரியாக எட்டு ஐம்பத்தைந்துக்கு இரண்டு பேரின் தோள்களில் கைகளை ஊன்றிக் கொண்டு மேடையில் வந்து அமர்ந்துவிட்டார் மௌலானா முஹம்மத் ஷஃபி மூனிஸ். 94 வயது முதியவர் அவர். அறுபதாண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக இயக்கப் பணிகளில் ஊறித் திளைத்தவர். அவருடைய ஆர்வத்தைக் கண்டு கண்கள் பனிக்க திரும்பிப் பார்க்கின்றேன். பாதி அரங்கம் காலியாக இருந்தது. 

நிகழ்ச்சி ஐந்து மணிநேரத்துக்கும் அதிகமாக நீடிக்க தம்முடைய இருக்கையிலிருந்து எழாமல் கடைசி வரை பங்கேற்ற அவர் எங்கே? நாம் எங்கே? நேரந்தவறாமையும் ஒழுங்கும் கட்டுப்பாடும் மிக்க அத்தகைய ஊழியர்களை எங்கிருந்து கொண்டு வரப் போகின்றோம்?

And one has to read his last interview. Dr Waquar Anwar interviewed him for Radiance Views weekly. It is pleasing, inspiring to read. The answers are to the point, blunt and very guarded. You can see the typical Shafee Moonis stamp on them. Dr Waquar Anwar has tried very hard to get stuff from the Moulana. But, it might have been a very adventorous experience of him. The Jijhak, dar with which he placed and phrased his questions is very palpable.
